Simplicity, patience, compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies,
you accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
you reconcile all beings in the world.
― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

This painting would look best in a small space that is red, orange, yellow, green, dark blue, white, black, grey, beige, or wood.

The light splash of water breaks the silence as I load the gear before sunrise at the dock.  The boat sputtering toward the channel as I make my way to the big lake.  Setting up the equipment, the sun is glowing orange as it begins to appear.  I eat my doughnut watching it rise and waiting to snag a rainbow trout.  The boat rocking in the gentle breeze.

Our boat arrives at a pile of lava just off Sullivan Bay on Isla Santiago.  A primordial wind-swept landscape dotted with sunbathing turtles and playful penguins.  Our ascent up the wooden steps toward the summit is slow as iguanas, eagles, and other wildlife interrupt.  Creatures weaving in and out of every lava formation and jagged cliff.  And when we arrive at the summit, we must contemplate the magic of the Earth.

Our boat left promptly at 8 am from the dock.  The light spray of the warm waters keep us deceptively unaware of the sun's heat.  The helmsman loudly proclaims "there's Kicker Rock" and points as soon as it comes within view.  The anticipation grows as we get closer and prepare our snorkeling equipment.  We've seen so many incredible animals on the islands already; what's could be under the water?

Three Boats In the Harbor

Three Boats In the Harbor, about 1990s
oil painting on canvas
8" x 10" in a white frame (20.3 cm x 25.4 cm in a white frame)

Where Can I Find Art?  A good place to start is online.  Especially if you're not sure what you're looking for.  Randomly visit pages on  Etsy.com, SaatchiArt.com, Sothebys.com, and even Craigslist.com to see what artists are making.  You may not find what you are looking for, but you may discover the styles and subjects you want.  And that's a great step forward.

Social media can be a wonderful tool for finding and purchasing artwork too.  If you find an artist you like, you should follow them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, or any other places you have in common.  Many artists will share their latest pieces, upcoming shows, or give insights into their work.

While New York City, Paris, and London are famous for their galleries, many towns have galleries of their own with a range of local and international artists.  Art festivals and craft fairs are popular annual events that can sometimes travel around the country.  Many artists have studios that are open to the public.  Shows, events, and studios are great places to visit when you're on vacation too.

It's also important just to keep your eyes open when going around town.  Does the cafe where you get your coffee in the morning have pieces for sale on the walls?  What are those paintings in the garage sale or thrift store?  Does the pieces in your favorite restaurant have price tags on them?  Interesting artwork can show up in unique places.  And the more unique, the better the story usually is.  (more at: http://mikekraus.blogspot.com/p/how-to-use-original-artwork-in-your.html)

This painting would look best in a space that is narrow or intimate.  It would work best in a space that is red, yellow, orange, light blue, green, purple, black, white, grey, beige, or wood.

Beach In Albufeira, Portugal

Beach In Albufeira, Portugal, 2014
Acrylic on canvas board
10" x 8"

Not too far from Faro on the Algarve coast is the town of Albufeira.  An old fisherman's village turned tourist destination.  Travelers are attracted to the burning sun above the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean.  It's rare to find an empty beach nestled against the golden sandstone cliffs.  A place to rejuvenate under the rays with a little vinho verde.

This painting would look best in a space that is blue, light green, light pink, orange, light purple, grey, or sand beige.

Mike and Megan's Honeymoon: Day 4 - Goodbye Albufeira!

July 1

Photobucket
Megan and her new lobster husband. We had to go to the beach despite our burns. So, we scouted, travelled and moved a lot finding little pieces of shade wherever we could to enjoy our last day in Albufeira

Sangria and Don cookies under the drinking tree in the main plaza.

Igreja Matriz de Albufeira was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 by the then Bishop of the Algarve, Francisco Gomes de Avelar. One thing you learn about Portugal, is that everything is somehow related to the earthquake of 1755. The way some locals talk about it, you would think it occurred yesterday.

So, Albufeira is super touristy for Europeans. There are tons of English, Dutch, and other northern Europeans hanging around, which means a lot of the restaurants cater to and are owned by folks from their respective countries (i.e. Dutch people eat at a Dutch restaurant decorated orange for the World Cup owned by a Dutch guy). So, we asked a local where the locals go to eat. Without hesitation, he said "Casa Madeira. Go there." We replied, "Great, where is it?"
"I can't show you on a map." he stated.
"Um... Okay... Is it near anything?"
"Old town." Mind you, everything is near Old Town. Anyway, we decided to try another restaurant and accidently made it to the one he recommended. It was on a main street easily show-able on a map. I think he realized tourists shouldn't go to local restaurants...

Photobucket
MMMmmmm... Kabab Madeira-style. What makes it Madeira style? Apparently, you take all the animals of a farm, butcher them, put all their meat on a huge skewer, cook it and let all the meat juices fall onto a huge plate of fries. In other words, the perfect meal.

Photobucket
CLIFF CAT! We finally saw one on the last day. We've seen dogs, such as "beach bum dog" who plays with all the tourists at the beach, and cats roaming around perfectly well-behaved throughout Albufeira and Portugal apparently without owners. In Albufeira, many of the cats live in the cliffs. This one was looking for bugs to eat or something.

Goodbye Albufeira! What a great way to relax after the insanity of a great wedding and long flights...
